Custom Cartridge Box Packaging: 7 Things to Check Before Production

A custom cartridge box may look perfect in a digital mockup, but will it actually fit your product?
Will the cartridge stay securely in place? Will the child-resistant mechanism work smoothly? Will the printed color match your brand?
These are common concerns when brands source custom cartridge box packaging.
Before starting mass production, here are seven important details to confirm with your packaging supplier.

1. Confirm the Actual Product Dimensions

One of the most common packaging mistakes is designing the box before confirming the final product dimensions.
For cartridge packaging, even small differences in height, width or diameter can affect the fit.
Before creating the box dieline, provide:
  • Product height
  • Maximum width or diameter
  • Thickness
  • Any protruding components
  • Whether protective caps are included
If possible, provide a physical sample or accurate technical drawing.
Important: Always measure the complete product in its final shipping configuration, including any protective accessories(seal plug on the mouthpiece and bottom).
This helps avoid boxes that are too tight or too loose.

2. Choose the Right Box Structure

Not every cartridge requires the same packaging structure.
Common options include:

Folding Paper Box

A lightweight and economical option for brands that need custom printing and efficient storage.

Drawer Box

A sliding structure that creates a different unboxing experience and can accommodate custom inserts.

Magnetic Closure Box

A custom magnetic closure box offers a premium packaging solution for cartridges, combining a rigid paperboard structure with a built-in magnetic closure for a smooth and satisfying unboxing experience.

Child-Resistant Paper Box

For products requiring restricted access, specially designed mechanical locking structures may be appropriate.
The correct structure depends on product dimensions, retail positioning, budget and regulatory requirements.

3. Do You Need a Custom Insert?

An insert helps hold the product in place inside the box.
Without proper support, the product may move during shipping and handling.
Depending on the box structure, options may include:
  • Die-cut paperboard inserts
  • Folded paper supports
  • Molded inserts
  • Custom cavities matched to the product
For a cartridge with a narrow body, the insert should support the product without creating excessive pressure.
The goal is to prevent unnecessary movement while allowing the customer to remove the product conveniently.

4. Does the Box Need a Child-Resistant Lock?

Some products require child-resistant packaging under applicable regulations.
Mechanical options may include push-button locking structures or other specialized opening mechanisms.
Before selecting a structure, consider:
Opening resistance: Does the mechanism function as intended?
Adult usability: Can an adult open the box following the instructions?
Product fit: Does the lock interfere with the product or insert?
Durability: Does the structure remain functional after repeated opening?
A box described as child-resistant should not automatically be assumed to meet every market's legal requirements.
If independent testing or certification is required, confirm this before production so the appropriate design and testing process can be arranged.

5. Choose the Right Paper and Printing Finish

The material and finish influence both packaging appearance and production cost.
Common customization options include:
  • Printed paperboard
  • Matte or glossy lamination
  • Spot UV
  • Raised UV
  • Gold or silver foil stamping
  • Embossing and debossing
  • Custom Pantone colors
For example, a matte black box with a metallic logo can create a clean, premium appearance.
A colorful design with selective UV highlights may be more suitable for brands that want stronger shelf visibility.
However, not every finishing process can be applied to every location.
Areas close to folds, creases or locking mechanisms need special consideration.
Tip: Avoid placing thick raised coatings directly across critical fold lines, where cracking or poor folding may occur.

6. Check Color Accuracy Before Mass Production

Packaging color can look different on a computer screen, digital proof and printed paper.
This becomes especially important when your packaging needs to match the color of the actual cartridge housing.
For brand-critical colors, we recommend providing a Pantone reference or an approved physical color standard.
Before mass production, confirm:
  • CMYK or Pantone printing
  • Paper surface and lamination
  • Color tolerance
  • Approved production sample
  • Special finish locations
If exact brand consistency is important, discuss it before printing rather than after production has started.

7. Approve a Physical Sample

A digital rendering is useful for checking appearance, but it cannot fully confirm functionality.
Before mass production, a physical sample can help verify:
  • Box dimensions
  • Product and insert fit
  • Opening and closing function
  • Structural strength
  • Print appearance
  • Fold lines and assembly
  • Placement of logos and finishes
If the box includes a child-resistant mechanism, functional testing is particularly important.
For a newly developed structure, sample approval helps reduce the risk of costly changes during production.
