How to Choose Materials & Finishes for Custom Mylar Bags
When ordering custom Mylar bags, one of the first questions is:
Which material and finish should I choose?
The answer depends on what you're packing, how much protection the product needs, how you want it displayed, and whether child-resistant packaging is required.
Here are the main options to consider before requesting a quote.
1. Start With What You're Packing
The packaging structure should be selected based on the product inside — not just appearance.
For food products, we normally recommend a structure with an aluminum barrier layer and food-grade PE inner layer.
The aluminum layer helps improve barrier performance, while the food-grade PE layer is suitable for direct food contact.
Before choosing a material, tell your supplier:
- What product will be packed?
- How much will each bag hold?
- Does it need protection from moisture, oxygen or light?
- Does the bag need to be resealable?
This helps determine the appropriate bag structure and thickness.
2. Clear Window or Full-Barrier Bag?
Sometimes customers want consumers to see the product before buying it.
In this case, a custom clear window can be added to the pouch.
The window can be customized in different shapes and positions to match your artwork.
This works particularly well when product visibility is important.
However, if maximum light protection is the priority, a full-barrier structure may be a better choice.
So before adding a window, consider what matters more:
product visibility or light barrier performance?
3. Matte or Holographic Mylar Bags?
The surface material has a major impact on how your packaging looks on the shelf.
Matte Finish
Matte Mylar bags offer a clean, smooth and more understated appearance.
They're a good choice for brands looking for a simple or premium presentation without too much reflection.
Holographic Finish
If you want the packaging to stand out more, holographic Mylar bags create changing colors and reflections under different lighting.
They're especially useful when shelf impact is important.
You don't necessarily have to make the entire bag holographic.
Holographic elements can also be combined with printed areas to create contrast.
4. Printing Finishes: UV, Foil & Soft-Touch
Once the basic material is selected, additional finishes can make certain parts of the artwork stand out.
Spot UV
Spot UV adds a glossy raised or contrasting effect to selected areas.
It can be used to highlight:
- Logos
- Product names
- Patterns
- Key design elements
Hot Foil Stamping
Foil creates a metallic effect and is commonly used for logos, borders or important design details.
Gold and silver are common choices, but other foil colors are also available.
Holographic Effects
Holographic materials or effects can create stronger visual impact and make the pouch react differently under changing light.
Soft-Touch Film
Soft-touch lamination creates a smoother, more tactile surface.
It's a good option when you want the packaging to feel more premium when customers hold it.
The important thing is not to use every finish at once.
Choose one or two effects that support the artwork rather than making the package unnecessarily complicated.
5. Regular Zipper or Child-Resistant Zipper?
This is another important decision.
Regular Resealable Zipper
A regular zipper is easy to open and close and works well for many everyday products.
Child-Resistant Zipper
For products requiring additional access protection, you can choose a child-resistant zipper structure.

Regular zipper
or
Child-resistant zipper
Don't choose a CR zipper only based on appearance. Packaging requirements can vary depending on the product and market, so the appropriate structure should be confirmed for your application.
6. Small Details That Improve the Bag
Some options look simple but can make the finished packaging much easier to use.
Custom Hang Hole
If the bags will be displayed on retail hooks, we can add a custom hang hole.
Its size and position can be adjusted according to the pouch design.
Rounded Corners
Instead of sharp square corners, the bag can be made with rounded corners.
This creates a smoother edge and can help reduce the chance of sharp corners scratching hands during packing and handling.
Tear Notch
A properly positioned tear notch helps consumers start opening the pouch more easily.
For some structures, the tear design needs to be considered together with the laminate construction.
This is especially important if you've experienced peeling or delamination when opening your existing bags.
